Allegedly belligerent motorcyclist shot to death while in police custody

A motorcyclist who had been arrested over a road accident was shot to death in Makati City on Friday while inside a Highway Patrol Group (HPG) police car after he allegedly continued to resist authorities.

According to a Saturday report by Bam Alegre on GMA News TV program "Balitanghali Weekend", motorcyclist John Dela Riarte was on his way to work when he crashed into a car at the south bound lane of EDSA-Estrella in Makati City around 9 a.m.

When police officers from the Highway Patrol Group arrived at the scene, they allegedly saw a berserk Dela Riarte smashing the car with his helmet.

The HPG men and MMDA traffic constables tried to pacify Dela Riarte, but he allegedly threatened to shoot them.

A witness named "Mark" saw part of the altercation. "Pinipigilan siya ng tatlong MMDA tapos dalawang HPG. Pagkatapat na pagkatapat ko bigla siyang sinikmuraan ng isang HPG," the witness said.

Dela Riarte was then bundled into the HPG police car, where he reportedly continued to be aggresive.

It was at this point that the 27-year-old Dela Riarte allegedly headbutted PO2 Jonjie Manon-og and grabbed the latter's gun. This compelled the second HPG police officer, PO3 Jeremiah De Villa, to shoot Dela Riarte twice.

Dela Riarte later died in hospital.

"First day niya. Talagang proud pa sya sa amin kasi makapagtrabaho siya ulit," Dela Riarte's brother, Robert, told GMA News. "Kaya na-shock lang kami sa balita."

The HPG declined to give a statement when reached for comment by GMA News. — Virgil Lopez/DVM, GMA News
