MMDA: Illegally parked vehicles in Makati will be towed

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday served towing notice on illegally parked vehicles to barangays in Makati City.

A GMA News TV Live report said despite the written warning, there were still some vehicles towed by the MMDA along roads in Makati.

However, some owners of the towed vehicles claimed they were not aware of parking regulations on the street or blamed the MMDA for having rigid rules on parking.

They also insisted that there is a local ordinance in Makati which allowed parking in their respective barangays, and that there are also parking attendants who collect parking fees in Makati.

Under the Metro Manila Council Ordinance No. 78-03, MMDA is authorized "to tow and impound illegally parked vehicles."

MMDA said that any driver who will be found to have illegally parked shall pay a fine of P500.

A standard towing fee shall also be collected by the government and private entities. Light vehicles weighing less than 4,500 kilograms (KGs) are subjected to pay P1,500 for the first 4 kilometers.

Meanwhile, medium vehicles (weighing between 4501 KG and 7500 KG) shall pay P2,500 for the first 4 KM and Heavy vehicles (weighing 7501 KG and above) shall pay P4,500 for the first 4 KM.

MMDA said, "a P200 shall be charged per kilometer of top of the base fee measured from place of towing to the impounding area."

The report said that MMDA will further distribute written warning to other barangays around Metro Manila on Friday afternoon. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/KBK, GMA News
