DENR tests Manila Bay waters; plans informal-settlers relocation

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Saturday collected water samples from the Manila Bay for examination ahead of a planned rehabilitation of the natural harbor.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu visited the part of the bay near a well-known mall, and noticed the stench coming from the water, GMA 7 news program "24 Oras Weekend" reported.

"The results [of the testing] will be released by Monday. If mataas ang coliform, we'll find out kung saan nanggagaling. Then we will extend to them, before we give the notice of violation, we'll call for them in a conference," said Cimatu.

The DENR had previously said that they were looking to reduce the coliform levels at the Manila Bay before the end of the year, and eventually make the waters fit for swimming.

During inspection, Cimatu also said that informal settlers had to be prohibited from residing at the Baseco Compound's breakwater.

While they waited for informal settlers to be relocated, the DENR would, in the meantime, put up barriers so that garbage could no longer reach the Manila Bay.

"'Yung mga nandito sa outside of that dike, they are not supposed to be there lalo na itong mga informal settlers na ito... They have to go," Cimatu said. — Jamil Santos/DVM, GMA News
