Comelec: Relief for Cerafica supporters is to file poll protest

Supporters of Taguig Representative Arnel Cerafica, who lost the Taguig City mayoralty race to former Taguig Representative Lino Cayetano during the May 2019 polls, should file an election protest rather than taking to the streets in protest of election results, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Friday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez made the response since Cerafica’s supporters clogged the streets in Taguig City last night, stranding commuters as the traffic jam prevented public utility vehicles from traversing their usual route.

“They will have to file a formal protest on what they want to be done,” Jimenez said.

Cayetano, a member of the Nacionalista Party, beat Cerafica of the ruling party PDP-Laban, by over 50,000 votes.

Jimenez also clarified that special elections cannot be held just to satisfy the protesters.

“The winners have already been proclaimed. The elections are over and done with,” Jimenez added.

As of Friday, May 24, the Comelec has already received five electoral protests from Taguig, San Juan, Cavite, Kalinga and Benguet.

Jimenez, however, clarified that the protest from Taguig does not involve Cayetano and Cerafica. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
