Heavy traffic on EDSA southbound as all buses confined to yellow lane

Several vehicles were stuck in heavy traffic on the southbound lane of EDSA on Tuesday.

Due to the congestion, private vehicles were stuck and could not get on the EDSA-Kamuning flyover easily.

In an explanation sent to a netizen, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said on Twitter that all buses were made to stay on the yellow lane.

"Sa yellow lane lang po pinapadaan lahat ng mga bus," the MMDA said.

This has forced several buses, both city and provincial, to occupy several lanes and try to get on the yellow lane, in the process blocking several lanes for motorists.

The tail end of the southbound traffic on EDSA has reached the Trinoma area.

A Quezon City court on July 31 issued an order temporarily halting the MMDA’s ban on provincial buses along EDSA.

Transport group Bus Transport Workers Council said more than 70,000 passengers from the provinces will be affected by the provincial bus ban, Allan Gatus reported on Super Radyo dzBB.

The group said these are passengers traveling from Southern Tagalog, Bicol region, and Visayas to Manila every day.

MMDA Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago in an interview on Super Radyo DZBB said the traffic gridlock has already reached the inner streets like Scout Borromeo, on the side near the EDSA-Kamuning footbridge.

Pialago further said provincial buses have also been occupying the yellow lanes, which added to the volume of vehicles on EDSA.

The assistant secretary admitted some of the MMDA personnel had committed lapses in enforcing the new policy and assured the public that these personnel will face sanctions.

"Ang naging stand po ng MMDA dito, 'yung mga nagkamali ho sa pagmando ng traffic iimbestigahan po at pananagutin po ni GM Jojo Garcia, lalo na 'yung mga nagsasabi na ang provincial buses ay hindi pinapadaan sa flyover at saka sa mga tunnel, which is dapat po doon sila," Pialago said.

"Rest assured po by tomorrow we're hoping hindi na po ganito," she added. —Jamil Santos/KG, GMA News
