SLEX northbound lane congested: ‘Please bear with us,’ says management

The South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) northbound lane resembled a parking lot early Thursday morning due to heavy traffic amid a Skyway extension project, prompting management to ask drivers for their patience and cooperation.

According to a report by Connie Sison on GMA News' Balitanghali, the closure of SLEX Lane 3 northbound past the Alabang viaduct due to the construction of the Skyway Stage 3 Project is the reason for the traffic.

In an interview with Sison, Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) spokesperson Julius Corpus also asked drivers for their patience and cooperation, promising good results.

"Malaki pong kaluwagan ang maibibigay ng proyekto na ito pagka ito'y matapos na," Corpus said.

In the meantime, he asked the drivers to allot extra time allowance for their travel time to adjust to the construction, which is expected to finish in December 2020.

According to Corpus, once finished, the project will create an direct link to the Skyway elevated section starting from Susana Heights, meaning that drivers would no longer have to take the road under the Skyway where the traffic is congested.

"On both sides, magkakaroon tayo ng additional two lanes, convertible to three, so we are giving additional capacity at the elevated session [and] at the same time, magkakaroon pa ng additional one lane na ginagamit ngayon exclusively for the on-ramp ng elevated sa baba," Corpus said.

This would decongest the traffic, he added.

Counterflow

A counterflow contingency measure is being used to temporarily alleviate the traffic.

However, according to Corpus, the counterflow may not be used all day and its implementation will be intermittent.

Though the counterflow measure started already, Sison noted that there was no implementation on Thursday morning.

According to Corpus, the management will look into the matter and shared that they are also looking into other traffic mitigation measures that may be applicable to make the flow of traffic easier.

Meanwhile, the East Service Road is using the stop-and-go scheme to help alleviate the traffic.

Corpus also suggested alternative routes for drivers.

"Ito pong mga pa-northbound natin na galing sa south, kung hindi po tayo makapag effect ng counterflow measures dulot ng mabigat din ang pa-soutbound, pwede po silang lumabas muna' yung mga elevated users dito sa Filinvest at pumasok ulit dito sa Alabang-Zapote elevated entrance naman ng Skyway," he said.

He added that SLEX management is sending more traffic enforcers and emergency vehicles out in case of incidents. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
