Woman, newborn die as hospital allegedly turned pregnant mom away

A family is seeking justice from a Sampaloc, Manila hospital following the death of a pregnant woman and her infant after they were asked to transfer to another hospital just as she was about to give birth.

According to a Sunday report by Vonne Aquino on 24 Oras Weekend, 23-year-old Myra Morga was rushed to the Ospital ng Sampaloc on the afternoon October 21 by her live-in partner Danilo Publico and her sister Rebecca as she was due and had started to bleed.

However, upon their arrival at the hospital, they were asked to transfer instead to the Sta. Ana Hospital without any explanation.

They attempted to enlist the help of an ambulance and its crew to help with the transfer as they had no money for the commute.

However, the ambulance team refused to drop them off at the Sta. Ana Hospital itself as they had no contact with any of the doctors there.

The victim was thus dropped off a block away from the hospital and was forced to walk the rest of the way.

“Ang sinabi ko po, ‘Ma’am baka puwede niyo naman po kaming itutok doon sa harap, maski sa gate lang po ng Sta. Ana Hospital. Hindi raw po talaga pupuwede,” Publico recounted.

When they were nearing the hospital, Morga collapsed as strangers and the responders in the ambulance looked on.

The victim gave birth to a boy at around 12 a.m., but he was already dead.

Morga likewise passed away a few hours later at almost 2 a.m.

The patient’s death certificate lists hypovolemic shock or excessive bleeding, very severe anemia, and abruptio placenta as her causes of death.

Aside from their complaint against the Ospital ng Sampaloc, the family was also seeking financial assistance as Morga was a trash collector and her partner Publico was a jeepney barker.

Administrators from either the Ospital na Sampaloc and Sta. Ana Hospital would comment on the matter.

However, the Manila City Government, which had jurisdiction over both hospitals, said the director of the Ospital ng Sampaloc had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque also said he would be ordering an investigation into the Morga case. — Julia Mari Ornedo/DVM, GMA News
