Executives of hospitals tagged in death of pregnant woman face Isko

The administrators of the two hospitals tagged in the death of a pregnant woman and her infant last Monday faced Manila Mayor Isko Moreno for an investigation by the local government.

According to GMA News’ Maki Pulido’s report on Balitanghali, Moreno spoke with the administrators of the Ospital ng Sampaloc and Sta. Ana Hospital on Monday morning.

The Manila mayor ordered an investigation into the doctors and ambulance responders involved in the death of Myra Morga, who was previously reported to have died after a hospital turned her away when she was already due to give birth.

Initial investigation

The initial investigation by the Manila City government showed that Morga was rushed to the Ospital ng Sampaloc around 8 a.m. on October 21 due to bleeding.

Upon her arrival at the hospital with some relatives, doctors found that her unborn child had no heartbeat.

The Ospital ng Sampaloc made Morga undergo an ultrasound to confirm the loss of her baby’s heartbeat but eventually asked her to transfer to the Sta. Ana Hospital as they did not have the necessary facilities to accommodate her case.

The Ospital ng Sampaloc still declared Morga as “stable,” meaning that she could still manage to transfer hospitals on her own.

However, Morga’s sister and relatives said they do not believe that the victim was in stable condition as she had already become pale from excessive bleeding.

At around 10 a.m., after waiting for other relatives to arrive, Morga was transferred to the Sta. Ana Hospital by an ambulance.

The administrators of the said hospital noted that the victim needed eight bags of blood upon her arrival as the fetus had already separated from the placenta, causing massive bleeding that ultimately led to her death.

The administrator of Ospital ng Sampaloc could not explain to GMA News why Morga was not immediately rushed by an ambulance to the Sta. Ana Hospital. They added that they have yet to speak with the responders in the ambulance.

Although the two hospitals are under the jurisdiction of the Manila City government, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said he has ordered an investigation into the case of Morga.

Duque said the case was clearly an emergency, thus the victim should have immediately been transferred to another hospital by the Ospital ng Sampaloc. — Julia Mari Ornedo/RSJ, GMA News
