MMDA concedes many motorists not observing ECQ, seeks LGUs' help

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday sought the help of local government units in addressing the noticeable increase in the volume of vehicles plying EDSA even amid in enhanced community quarantine.

“It means na marami sa ating mga tao hindi nago-observe ng ECQ,” said MMDA special traffic and transport zone head Bong Nebrija on Dobol B sa News TV. “It seems na ‘yung checkpoints, hindi rin napatupad.”

Nebrija said an unusual build up of vehicle was observed near Balintawak and Nepa Q markets over the weekend.

He called on local government units and police personnel to help MMDA enforcers in monitoring the major thoroughfare to ensure that the public is really observing the ECQ.

“It is not a problem of traffic, 'yung social distancing at ECQ ang pinoproblema namin,” Nebrija said.

The Quezon City government has recently suspended the retail selling in seven Balintawak markets after discovering that the location and structure of these markets are not suitable for physical distancing.

In a separate interview, Quezon City Task Force Disiplina action officer Rannie Ludovica explained that the retail customers in Balintawak trooped to Nepa Q Mart and Muñoz Market after the suspension.

Ludovica assured that more LGU and police personnel will man the concern areas to ensure that the physical distancing is being observed among shoppers. --Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
