QCPD files raps vs. 18 Labor Day protesters, guard who injured Grab driver

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is set to file charges on Saturday against 18 protesters who initially violated the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), and a security guard who assaulted and badly injured a Grab driver on Labor Day in Quezon City.

In a statement, QCPD director Police Brigadier General Ronnie Montejo said the 18 protesters will face cases of violations of Republic Act No. 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act in Relation to Proclamation No. 922 and 929, Republic Act No. 11469 or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, and Batas Pambansa No. 880 or the Public Assembly Act of 1985, and will be referred for inquest.

Based on the police report, the protesters, led by some members of the Tulong Kabataan party-list, held an illegal protest rally on Kalayaan Avenue corner Maparaan Street at past 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1.

The protesters shouted on the street as they lined-up while holding tarpaulins with their grievances printed on it. 

The demonstrators were taken into police custody and were brought before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit for proper disposition after a dialogue with authorities, Montejo said. 

Security guard-Grab driver incident

Meanwhile, a case of serious physical injury was filed against the security guard who was arrested by the Eastwood Police Station under Police Lieutenant Colonel Melchor Rosales in Eastwood, Libis.

At about 9 a.m. on Friday, the security guard, identified as Mark Julius Canay, accosted GrabFood delivery driver Romer Bacani for parking his motorcycle on a pedestrian crossing at the corner of C5 Road and Richmond Road in Barangay Bagumbayan in Libis. 

The two had a verbal tussle until Canay, who admitted to have lost his temper, punched Bacani in the left eye, causing serious injury. 

The victim reported the incident to the police, who responded immediately and arrested the suspect. —Jamil Santos/KG, GMA News
