Marikina volunteers arrested during Labor Day have been released —group

The 10 volunteers who were arrested on Labor Day while conducting a feeding program have been released on Saturday, according to rights group Gabriela.

In a statement, Gabriela said the prosecutor found the evidence on alleged illegal assembly and violation of the law on communicable disease insufficient.

“Their release signifies our resolve to thwart the criminalization of community-initiated bayanihan and the strength of our collective calls to resist the tyrannical and militaristic implementation of the community quarantine,” the group said.

On Friday, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro urged policemen to release them, saying that the authorities overreacted.

—Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
