Total lockdown in Barangay Mauway in Mandaluyong starts

A total lockdown in Barangay Mauway in Mandaluyong City went ahead as scheduled and began at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, May 11.

The lockdown, which was ordered by the local government to address the threat of COVID-19 and allow for mass testing, will last until 11:59 p.m. of Wednesday, May 13.

All roads leading to and out of the barangay have been closed, according to a report by Mai Bermudez on GMA News' Unang Balita on Monday.

Vehicles will not be allowed to travel, except for emergency.

The public market and talipapa were closed, as well as other establishments.

Authorities allowed the delivery of LPG tanks coming from outside the barangay.

They also assured that garbage collection will continue.

Only health workers and other authorized persons outside of residence will be allowed out of their homes.

A total of 71 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the barangay as of Saturday. This number does not include the 18 confirmed COVID-19 cases inside the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) which is also located within the barangay.

Barangay Mauway chairman Bernie Evangelista said they recommended a total lockdown before when there was only one case in the barangay and one inside NCMH.

He said they projected then that the case will worsen, which has already happened at the time the total lockdown was implemented on Monday.

During the lockdown, mass testing to screen for COVID-19 will be conducted on residents, but residents said more time may be needed to do thorough screening.

The local government said those who will test positive for COVID-19 based on the rapid antibody test will be brought to ULTRA and Clark, Pampanga quarantine facilities.

However, Evangelista said this was not clear since he was told the ULTRA facility is for Pasig residents only. —KG, GMA News
