MMDA expects less workers to travel to Metro Manila during shift to GCQ

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is expecting that less workers would troop to Metro Manila during the proposed shift to general community quarantine (GCQ).

In a public briefing on Wednesday, MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said the number of workers travelling to Metro Manila before the COVID-19 pandemic would not be the same with the current situation.

“Tandaan po natin kapag tayo po ay nagdowngrade sa GCQ nandoon pa rin po yung CQ which means na community quarantine, meaning may mga restriction pa rin po tayo at may mga bagay po na hindi pa rin pwedeng gawin,” Garcia said.

“Hindi talaga 'yun na in-eexpect natin na dating normal. Ibang-iba na po ang normal natin,” he added.

Garcia said some companies are operating through reduced and skeleton workforce, while some are implementing work from home arrangements.

He made the statement when asked how workers will commute in Metro Manila while the public transport is still limited.

“Of course, magkukulang at magkukulang ‘yan pero gradually i-increase natin ‘yan,” Garcia said.

The Metro Manila Council (MMC) earlier proposed placing the NCR under GCQ from modified enhanced community (ECQ) quarantine on June 1, but some restrictions and limitations will remain.

In a  statement Tuesday, Garcia said the MMC also recommended allowing only company-provided shuttle services, point-to-point vehicles, taxis, Transport Network Vehicle Services, and tricycles.

The council still wants to prohibit public utility buses and jeepneys under the GCQ, saying that social distancing will be hard to manage in these vehicles. —AOL, GMA News
