Fewer bus routes under GCQ, LTFRB chair reminds NCR commuters amid confusion

There were fewer routes for buses traversing Metro Manila on Monday, June 1, 2020, the first day of the implementation of the general community quarantine (GCQ), explaining why buses don't stop at some previously designated spots.

Interviewed on Unang Balita, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board chairman Martin Delgra III said from 96 during pre-COVID-19 pandemic days, the number of routes was trimmed down to only 31.

"Ang ginawa natin, ni-rationalize natin yung ruta. And when we rationalized the routes from 96 to 31, meron na tayong na-identify na mga bus stops. Ibig sabihin hindi katulad ng dati na kung saan na lang bababa at sasakay mga pasahero," he said.

He said bus operators and drivers have been instructed not to load and unload passengers in between the new designated bus stops.

Delgra said with the rationalized routes, there will be more "turnaround trips" hence making it easier and faster for commuters to get their rides.

"Because there is more turnaround trips, mas makakasakay yung mga pasahero ng mas madali. Yun po ang sistema na nilalagay po natin," he said.

As a limited number of public transportation are allowed to operate during GCQ, Delgra reminded commuters that health protocols like social distancing and wearing of face masks will be strictly implemented.

"That is our principal consideration, public health over public transport," Delgra said.

Aside from buses, trains, taxis and transport network vehicle services (TNVS) units are allowed to operate on phase 1 of GCQ. Modernized jeepneys and UV Express are expected to follow later this month. --KBK, GMA News
