MMDA to implement modified coding scheme on June 8

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will implement a modified number-coding scheme on vehicles starting Monday under the general community quarantine (GCQ).

MMDA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago said that all authorized persons outside of residence (APOR) will be exempted from the coding scheme.

“Modified coding will be implemented on Monday.  All APOR are exempted,” she said.

In a statement on Thursday, MMDA said the modified number coding scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic was approved by the Metro Manila Council (MMC).

“The regulation was unanimously approved by all the mayors of the seventeen local government units of Metro Manila during the last MMC meeting held on May 26, 2020 via video conference,” it said.

Based on MMDA Regulation 2020-001 series of 2020, the following vehicles are exempted from the number coding scheme:

  • those driven by health workers; and/or
  • those with two or more passengers including the driver, provided that social distancing and wearing of face masks is observed.

Pialago, meanwhile, advised drivers of transport network vehicle services (TNVS) to display a sign on their vehicles indicating that they are “TNVS.”

The number coding scheme has been suspended since March 13 after President Rodrigo Duterte placed Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon under an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) as a drastic measure against COVID-19 transmission.

The status has been downgraded to a less stringent GCQ starting June 1, allowing some mass public transportation systems to resume operations with reduced passenger capacities. --Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
