No traditional 'basaan' during San Juan fiesta amid COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Zamora says

There will be no traditional “basaan” activities during Wednesday’s celebration of the Feast of St. John the Baptist, the San Juan City government  announced Tuesday.

In a press statement, Mayor Francis Zamora said he wants a solemn celebration due to the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This year's theme is "Basbasan sa Makabagong San Juan."

Zamora has issued Executive Order No. 42, Series of 2020, "prohibiting the usual water dousing practices to avoid the risk of contamination due to water and to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to close proximity on the streets."

"Every year, our constituents look forward to a festive celebration. However, precautionary measures against the spread of the virus in the city must take precedence this 2020," Zamora explained.

"San Juan City is considered the ground zero of COVID-19 in the country but we have made huge headways in our fight against the virus. I don’t want the collective effort and sacrifices of our beloved San Juanenos and our frontliners to be for naught,” he added.

During the celebration on June 24, an image of St. John the Baptist will be paraded. Instead of “basaan," priests will sprinkle holy water to the residents.

Zamora and other local officials will also join the parade.

The mayor called on San Juan residents to stay in their home premises, observe physical distancing, and wear face masks during the celebration.

In his Facebook account, Zamora posted the announcement and route of the procession.

So far, San Juan City has recorded 25 active COVID-19 cases, its lowest since March 19.—AOL, GMA News
