Supporters hold noise barrage outside ABS-CBN in plea for its return

Employees, activists, and other members of the public held a noise barrage outside ABS-CBN Corporation's premises in Quezon City on Sunday in support of the embattled network after a House panel denied the renewal of its franchise last week.

"Nakakalilabot na eksena. Noise barrage at motorcade sa harap ng ABS-CBN ngayong gabi. Laban Kapamilya!" Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) secretary general Renato Reyes, Jr. said in a tweet.

"Panawagan para ibalik ang ABS-CBN mula sa iba’t ibang sektor at karaniwang mamamayan," he added in another tweet.

Last Friday the House Committee on Legislative Franchises voted, 70-11, not to renew the network's franchise, adopting the technical working group's recommendation to deny it based on the network's alleged violations of its old franchise.

Government agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Department of Justice (DOJ), however, cleared ABS-CBN Corporation of violations.

A survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed 75% of Filipinos in support of renewing ABS-CBN's franchise.

The House panel's decision puts the jobs of 11,000 ABS-CBN employees at risk in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. — BM, GMA News
