Manila continues to run after erring barangay officials amid quarantine — Mayor Isko

By ANNA FELICIA BAJO,GMA News

The local government of Manila City continues to sanction local officials who violate quarantine protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Isko Moreno said Monday.

At a Palace press briefing, Moreno said a barangay chairman is accused of being involved in illegal cockfighting in Tondo while some barangay officials were caught drinking alcoholic beverages outside their homes.

"Ngayon po mayroon tayong bagong kinasuhan na chairman, nahuli po silang nagsasabong at nakakuha po tayo ng mga testigo na talagang naglaro sila ng sabong during the GCQ sa isang maliit na eskinita sa Tondo," Moreno said without naming the barangay captain.

"'Yung isa naman ho, kanina may nakita akong video na nag-iinuman sa labas ng kalye, araw na araw, mga barangay officials. So tuloy-tuloy po 'yung ating pagkastigo sa mga iresponsableng barangay officials while at the same time pinupuri naman natin 'yung iba," he added.

Moreno said he already instructed Manila Police District chief Police Brigadier General Rolando Miranda and the local police commanders to constantly monitor the situation in the 896 barangays of the city.

Last week, at least 34 parents of minors who have allegedly violated quarantine measures were arrested by the police.

It was also reported that some residents of the city were seen ignoring social distancing measures and the proper wearing of face masks in public places amid the health crisis. — RSJ, GMA News
