NCR critical care facilities in COVID-19 ‘danger zone’ –DOH data

The critical care facilities of several hospitals in Metro Manila are now in the danger zone amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to data from the Department of Health (DOH).

According to Sandra Aguinaldo’s Friday report on “24 Oras,” the DOH previously said that a hospital is in the danger zone if its utilization rate is 70 percent and above.

In the National Capital Region, 88.42 percent of ward beds are occupied, 80.96 percent of isolated beds are occupied, 74.22 percent of ICU beds are occupied, and 46.97 percent of mechanical ventilators are occupied.

The ICU beds, isolation beds, and ward beds of hospitals in the following cities are in the danger zone:

  • Las Pinas
  • Manila
  • Marikina
  • Muntinlupa
  • Pasig

  • San Juan
  • Quezon City
  • Taguig

Isolation beds and ward beds are in the danger zone of the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, and Mandaluyong while ICU beds and ward beds are in the danger zone in Valenzuela.

Though 80 percent of Paranaque’s ICU beds are occupied, its other wards have plenty of space while many of its mechanical ventilators are still available.

Meanwhile, data showed that in Makati City, the number of ICU beds and mechanical ventilators are in the danger zone while its medical facilities have reached their full capacity for isolation beds and ward beds.

However, the City Government of Makati said that it still has space. It added that the data from the DOH may be based on the reports of private hospitals in the city.

“Siguro mas maganda ‘yung records dapat ng DOH and Ospital ng Makati mas ma-update para nga makita rin ho, ‘yung mapakita namin na may capacity pa ho kami dito sa Ospital ng Makati,” LGU spokesperon Michael Camina said.

The DOH explained that full capacity does not mean that the whole hospital is filled with patients as full capacity refers to beds and facilities assigned to COVID-19 patients. — DVM, GMA News
