Avigan trials to be held in select Metro Manila hospitals

Clinical trials for the Japanese anti-flu drug Avigan will soon be held in select hospitals across Metro Manila, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday.

Avigan is among the possible treatments for the coronavirus disease being explored by the DOH.

“The project will be implemented in selected hospitals in NCR including the Philippine General Hospital, Sta. Ana Hospital, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Quirino Memorial Medical Center,” the department said.

It added that the trials, tentatively scheduled to begin on August 10, will run for nine months.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier said the DOH was still finalizing legal documents but added that “it’s going to happen soon.”

The tablets, which will be tested on 100 patients, arrived in the country last week.

Meanwhile, Department of Science and Technology officials met with the manufacturer of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine to discuss phase 3 trials and its approval in the Philippines. —LDF, GMA News
