Manila LGU inaugurates Lagusnilad Underpass

The local government of Manila inaugurated the newly-rehabilitated Lagusnilad Underpass on Monday morning.

Mayor Isko Moreno graced the event for the Manila City Hall Underpass, which is under Moreno's Bagong Maynila program.

A portion of the underpass was dedicated to the frontliners amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Manila local government, the redevelopment of the underpass was designed by alumni from the University of Santo Tomas, including Architect Juanito Malaga and graduates John Fallorina, Sean Ortiz and Leon Tuazon, in collaboration with the city government's Department of Engineering and Public Works.

It added that the mural and the bas-relief artwork was created in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and NCCA Gerilya artists inspired from the works of Botong Francisco.

The underpass will have 24/7 security, composed of designated security personnel and CCTV cameras which are connected to the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office command center, the Manila LGU said.

Moreno appealed to Manila residents to use the underpass properly and take care of it. He also issued a warning to those who plan to vandalize the said underpass.

"Here we are today, an underpass undisturbed, no obstruction unlike before. Malinis, maaliwalas. Gamitin nila nang tama at sana proteksyonan nila," Moreno said.

"Ngayon, kung artistic sila, sana huwag na nila dalhin dito 'yung pagiging artistic nila. Bring it somewhere else. 'Yun lang naman ang pakiusap ko," he added.

In 2019, Moreno got disappointed when the wall of the Lagusnilad Underpass was vandalized by cultural group Panday Sining after the underpass was cleared of illegal vendors. —KG/RSJ, GMA News
