Zamora orders closure of cemeteries, columbaries in San Juan during Undas

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora on Thursday directed the temporary closure of public and private cemeteries in the city beginning October 30 to November 3 to avoid transmission of COVID-19 during the Undas holidays.

"In order for the City of San Juan to sustain the gains it has achieved against its battle with COVID-19 and to thwart the current resurgence of the disease, it is necessary and proper to regulate the influx of people trooping to all public and private memorial parks, cemeteries and columbaries to commemorate Undas before, on or after All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day," Executive Order No. 49 said.

Zamora said signed EO No. 49 on Thursday morning.

Zamora also prohibited other Halloween activities such as tricks or treats to prevent the public, most especially the children, from gathering and going out of their residences.

"Halloween activities are allowed to be conducted in the confines of one's own home, provided that social distancing and other precautionary measures are complied with," the order stated.

Earlier, Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno also ordered the closure of cemeteries in the city as a measure to curb the spread of the virus.

The National Task Force against COVID-19 will recommend that the public be prohibited to go to cemeteries during Undas holidays due to the threat of COVID-19, testing czar Vince Dizon has said.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the closure of cemeteries during Undas would be discussed during the next meeting of the IATF. --Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
