Groups light candles at U-belt, ask NPA to stop recruiting students

Parents of students who joined progressive groups and concerned citizens on Wednesday conducted a rally and lighted candles in Morayta and Mendiola in Manila for the souls of the alleged victims of New People’s Army.

League of Parents of the Philippines and Liga Independencia Pilipinas also asked the communist armed group to stop recruiting students.

“This symbolic light a candle rally is a testament to how many of our families have fallen into the snare of the communist insurgency,” Jose Antonio Goitia, LIPI secretary general, said in a press statement.

“As we hope that the rest of the kids who are now with the rebels or are being recruited will survive, we cannot just sit down and wait for the bad news,” he added.

He said they must stand up and put a stop to the NPA recruitment as it is destroying their families.

One of the parents present was Relissa Lucena whose daughter Alicia joined Anakbayan. Relissa said Anakbayan kidnapped her daughter but the latter claimed that she left home to serve the people.
