90% of Marikina evacuees had already returned home, mayor says

Almost 90% of Marikina City residents driven to stay in evacuation centers by Typhoon Ulysses have already returned to their homes, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said Tuesday.

In a television interview, Teodoro said more than 1,000 families are still staying in evacuation centers across the city.

"We have 10,500 families evacuated last week, last November 12, during the typhoon. As we speak now, we only have 1,050 families remaining in the evacuation centers," Teodoro told ANC.

"So almost 90% of the evacuees have returned to their homes," he added.

Earlier reports said five evacuees have tested positive for COVID-19 after being subjected to swab tests.

Teodoro said local officials have continued their clearing operations in the city's major and secondary roads. He said Ulysses had caused 980,000 cubic meters of debris.

"What we're doing now, it's really imperative for us to clear the debris of the typhoon. Many of our roads are clogged with debris, the debris that we're collecting is equivalent to one and a half years of garbage to be collected in the city," he said, adding that the city government has already cleared 45% of the debris.

More than 500 damaged residences have already been assessed by the local government, according to Teodoro. --KBK, GMA News
