Elevated busway eyed on EDSA to improve traffic flow amid closure of U-turn slots —MMDA

An elevated busway will be set up on EDSA to improve traffic flow following the closure of some U-turn slots that motorists blame for the recent gridlock on the thoroughfare, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Thursday.

“Magkakaroon tayo ng elevated busway. We will be identifying portion of EDSA where we could designate a U-turn slot,” said MMDA Traffic Operations chief Bong Nebrija on Unang Hirit.

“Sa U-turn slot na 'yun, gagawa tayo ng elevated busway. Sa ibabaw dadaan 'yung bus. ‘Yung ilalim gagamitin naman ng private vehicles to take that U-turn.”

With this, Nebrija said private vehicles taking the U-turn slot will not block the busway.

He said the MMDA will source out funds for  the project, since the government’s focus at present is on the response to COVID-19 and recovery from its impact.

Nebrija admitted that the heavy traffic that was recently observed on EDSA was caused by the closure of U-turn slots from North Avenue to Balintawak.

“Yung mga volume ng vehicles, motorista who are taking the five U-turns na sinarado natin. They're building up doon sa pinaka-end to end ng ating big loop that is in Balintawak Cloverleaf and the other one is in Quezon Avenue,” he added.

According to Nebrija, the traffic situation on EDSA is expected to worsen in the coming weeks, but would eventually improve once motorists become familiar with the new system.

“Marami pa rin sa ating mga kababayan, siguro, they do not see the sign. They do not know the configuration of EDSA now,” he said. —KBK, GMA News
