Health measures, new normal dampen New Year's Eve revelry

New Year’s Eve revelry in Tondo, Manila's Barangay 155 was subdued due to the health measures implemented amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to Darlene Cay's Friday report on “24 Oras.”

“Bisperas pa lang kasi meron nang ano, may Mr. and Ms. na. Tapos ngayon dapat meron nang ano, meron nang costume party. Eh, ngayon wala. Hindi tayo maka ano ngayon, tahimik talaga ngayon,” said Barangay 155 resident Edmar Aquio.

It was much the same in most Metro Manila communities. Though some people were outside, there were no street parties unlike previous New Year celebrations.

A family that also usually celebrated New Year’s Eve out on the streets, chose to greet the new year at home.

“Sa ngayon po mas ma ano po ngayon kasi mas medyo tahimik po siya dahil walang paputok. Dito lang po kami sa loob dahil po syempre gawa ng nag iingat din po gawa sa mga bata,” Roda Gunda said.

Meanwhile, others found ways to celebrate the holidays while following health protocols.

In Barangay 525 in Sampaloc, residents set up a sound system and DJ outside their house.

“Maligayang bagong taon sa lahat. I love you all. Matapos na itong pandemyang ito,” a reveler said.

The residents also played games.

Despite the celebration, all residents were wearing face masks and following physical distancing measures. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
