PNP to deploy 10,000 cops to enforce Metro Manila curfew

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to deploy some 10,000 policemen to ensure that the uniform curfew hours in Metro Manila will be strictly implemented.

According to PNP officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar, he had instructed the police force to practice maximum tolerance and respect for human rights.

"To our personnel on the ground, be reminded of our two rules to avoid unnecessary confrontation to the public -- one, observe maximum tolerance; and two, respect the people's rights. We will be closely monitoring your compliance," he was quoted as saying in a "24 Oras Weekend" report on Sunday.

"And to the public, we also offer a formula to prevent unnecessary confrontation and spare yourself from arrest: one, respect the rules on observance of the minimum health safety standard protocols; and two, respect the authorities that are enforcing these protocols," he added.

The curfew hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. will be in effect for two weeks, following the spike in COVID-19 cases reported across the National Capital Region.

The Quezon City government also implemented a liquor ban that will be in effect until the end of the month. It has also ordered the suspension of gyms, spas, and internet cafes for the time being.

The Philippines on Sunday reported 4,899 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 to bring the total to 621,498. This includes 48,157 active cases 560,512 recoveries, and 12,829 deaths. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/DVM, GMA News
