P3-M misdeclared onions from China seized in Manila

Operatives of the Bureau of Customs-Manila International Container Port's (BOC-MICP) Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) seized a misdeclared shipment of red onions.

The apprehension of the shipment was done on May 26, the BOC said in a statement on Saturday.

Customs said the shipment, which originated from China, was originally declared as yellow onions but was later discovered to contain 60% red onions which was estimated to have a value of P3 Million.

The shipment in question was apprehended due to information gathered through intelligence efforts.

It was consigned to a certain Potanion Trading and was subjected to 100% physical examination which were witnessed by members of CIIS Enforcement and Security Service's Customs Anti-illegal Drugs Taskforce (ESS-CAIDTF), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Chamber of Customs Brokers Inc. (CCBI), according to the BOC.

A warrant of seizure and detention was issued against the shipment for the violation of Section 1113 and Section 1401 of RA 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA)

The MICP, the BOC said, remains committed to curb unscrupulous activities of those who illegally import goods into the country profiting from the demands of consumers especially during these trying times. -Ted Cordero/MDM, GMA News
