Fake police, cohorts nabbed for alleged extortion

A fake police officer, posing as a colonel, and his accomplices were arrested during an entrapment operation after they reportedly tried to extort cash from a vice mayor, police said Wednesday.

In its report, Philippine National Police Integrity Monitoring Enforcement Group (IMEG) chief Police Brigadier General Thomas Frias said suspects former Patrolman Joaquin Flores and his cohorts  Domingo  Corpuz;  Renz  Manago;  Elton  Lopez;  Gabriel  Momjuan;  Armando  Silao and Ocito Cerilo Delmonte were nabbed during an entrapment operation in Teachers Village in Quezon City this Wednesday at 12:50 noon.

Seized from them were P2,000 marked money; P300,000 boodle money; caliber .45 pistol with magazine and ammunition; glock caliber .40; cellphones; two radio units and assorted identification cards.

Prior to the arrest, complainant Vice Mayor of Talisay, Batangas Charlie Natanauan sought assistance from IMEG to arrest the suspect who introduced himself as Police Colonel Joaquin Flores and cohorts who demanded P380,000 from him in exchange for the immediate release of resolution on the vice mayor's case in the Ombudsman.

But Ombudsman Security Consultant Retired Police Brigadier General Nelson Yabut told IMEG that there were no cases filed against Natanauan, and suspects are not linked with the Office of the Ombudsman.

Suspects are now under custody of PNP-IMEG where they will face complaints for usurpation of authority, swindling, and illegal possession of firearms.

PNP-IMEG said it will pursue an in-depth probe into the suspects to identify other victims.—Consuelo Marquez/LDF, GMA News
