Over 100 staff, including 61 nuns in QC convent test positive for COVID-19

More than 100 personnel of the Religious of the Virgin Mary convent in Quezon City have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU) confirmed Wednesday.

According to Glen Juego’s report on Super Radyo dzBB, CESU said that of the 114 positive individuals, 61 are nuns while others are caregivers and drivers.

Eighty-six of the patients are experiencing mild symptoms, 22 are asymptomatic, four are moderate cases, while two are in severe condition.

The convent located in Barangay Kaunlaran has been placed under lockdown.

In a statement, the QC government said CESU is currently looking into the cause of the outbreak.

“Hindi po tayo ang nag-swab sa kanila. Nagpa-test po sila sa iba at nang lumabas na ang resulta sa laboratory, na-record ito sa surveillance data,” CESU chief Dr. Rolando Cruz said.

“Now, our team is conducting an investigation and intensive contact tracing to get more details about the matter,” he added.

Cruz said CESU will also identify possible close contacts outside the facility.

For her part, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte reminded the public to observe minimum health protocols against COVID-19.

“Patuloy po ang pagpapaalala natin na doblehin ang pag-iingat at agad na tumawag sa ating CESU kung may nakitaan ng sintomas sa inyong mga kasama,” she said.

“Mahalaga na maaga at maagap ang ating pagkilos para maiwasan ang mas maraming hawahan. Lagi naman tayong nakahandang rumesponde,” she added.

According to the local government, there are 12,491 active cases in the city. A total of 134,936 have recovered and 1,379 have died.

The Philippines has reported a total of 2,283,011 confirmed cases, of which 170,446 are still active, 2,076,823 have recovered, and 35,742 have died.—Joahna Lei Casilao/LDF, GMA News
