Almost 200 PUVs caught violating 70% capacity along Commonwealth

Some 200 public transportation vehicles (PUVs) were caught violating the 70% increased passenger capacity on the first few hours of its implementation.

According to a Balitanghali report by Super Radyo dzBB's Allan Gatus on Thursday, all vehicles were let off with a warning as a courtesy on the first day of the new guidelines. Tickets will be issued in the next following days.

The operation was conducted by the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) along Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, a separate report by James Agustin said the new guidelines on increased passenger capacity were welcomed by both jeepney drivers and passengers.

Jeepney drivers claimed that their income was not enough to cover their expenses, especially amid the recent increases in oil prices.

As a result, the guidelines on passenger capacity are often not followed in an effort to generate more income.

The new guidelines, adjusted amid the improving COVID-19 situation in the country, allow for 15 passengers for traditional PUJs with a 20-person capacity and 11 passengers for PUJs with a 14-person capacity. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/KBK, GMA News
