Cynthia Villar remains richest solon; Mariano poorest


MANILA, Philippines - Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar remains as the richest congressman in the country based on 2008 statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). Villar, wife of Senator Manuel “Manny" Villar, has an asset of P1.046 billion, or P5 million higher than her P1.041 billion declaration in 2007. Anakpawis party-list Rep. Rafael Mariano, meanwhile, is last year’s poorest congressman, with an asset only worth P55,501.72. Based on the SALN summary of members of the House of Representatives signed by lawyer Ricardo Bering, director of the House records management service, the second richest solon was Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez with an asset of P477.2 million. Negros Occidental Rep. Julio Ledesma, husband of actress Assunta de Rossi, was the third richest congressman with an asset of P447.529 million. Romualdez’ cousin, Ferdinand “Bongbong" Marcos Jr., the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, came at number 8th with P179.98 million. Speaker Prospero Nograles is in the 29th position with P88.261 million, while former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. was at 40th place with P62.728 million. Aurelio “Dong" Gonzales, P153.488 million; * Mindoro Oriental Rep. Rodolfo Valencia, P150.515 million; * Northern Samar Rep. Paul Ruiz Daza, with P140.409 million. The son of the late House Speaker Ramon Mitra Jr., Palawan Rep. Abraham Kalil Mitra, is on the 69th place, with an asset of P42.251 million. In the 13th place is Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy" Arroyo, P140.357 million.
