Past super typhoons in the Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has three categories to describe the intensity of a tropical cyclone--tropical depression, tropical storm, and typhoon.

CLASSIFICATION	MAXIMUM WIND SPEED
Tropical depression	up to 63 kph
Tropical storm	64-118 kph
Typhoon	exceeding 118 kph

A typhoon with maximum winds of 215 kph or greater is described by Pagasa as a "super typhoon". Typhoons Iliang and Loleng (1998), Harurot (2003) and Egay (2007) are such examples. Typhoons Yoyong in (2004) and nearly consecutive typhoons Paeng, Queenie and Reming in 2006 were also described by disaster officials and the media as "super typhoons" to emphasize that these were very strong typhoons. Except for Egay (2007), all the other super typhoons mentioned above were strong enough for Pagasa to raise Public Storm Warning Signal #4 as these typhoons passed the Philippine area of responsibility. Signal #4 is raised when a very strong winds of more than 185 kph is expected in at least 12 hours as a typhoon approaches.
