2-3 cyclones to visit RP in coming weeks - Pagasa

While Friday’s sudden downpour in Metro Manila was not due to a cyclone, residents should still brace for possible sudden thunderstorms for the rest of this weekend and in the coming weeks.

Cyclones in the Philippine territory for the rest of this year will be named 'Urduja,' 'Vinta,' 'Wilma,' 'Yolanda,' and 'Zoraida.'

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather services head Nathaniel Cruz also said two to three cyclones are due in November-December. “Wala tayong bagyo na natatanawan. Meron tayong wind convergence, mababa chance magkaroon ng ulan sa Metro Manila. (Pero) ang biglang thunderstorm pwede mangyari tulad ng naranasan natin kahapon (There is no cyclone approaching the country now, but we have a wind convergence. There is little chance of rain in Metro Manila but do not discount possible sudden thunderstorms)," Cruz said on government-run dzRB radio. A sudden downpour caused traffic jams and floods in parts of Metro Manila Friday afternoon and evening. But Cruz also said there are at least two more cyclones expected to enter Philippine territory in November and December, and will likely affect Visayas and Mindanao. “In November and December we expect two cyclones to enter our area of responsibility. We should be doubly alert. And this time, we expect the cyclones to pass through Visayas and Mindanao," he said in Filipino. Cyclones in the Philippine territory for the rest of this year will be named “Urduja," “Vinta," “Wilma," “Yolanda," and “Zoraida." An earlier Pagasa advisory indicated there will be little rain due to a mild El Niño that may last until early 2010. “The weather systems that are expected to affect the country in November are the northeast monsoon, the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), easterly wave, and tail-end of the cold front and the passage of two or three tropical cyclones," it said in its advisory for November. Temperature ranges will be 23°C to 33°C over Luzon, 15°C to 23°C over the mountainous areas of Luzon, 23°C to 32°C over the Visayas, 23°C to 33°C over Mindanao, and 19°C to 29°C over the mountainous areas of Mindanao. “Rainfall conditions in November are expected to be below normal in most parts of Luzon and Visayas including some areas of southern Mindanao. Metro Manila, Mindoro and most parts of Mindanao will likely experience near normal rainfall conditions," it added. Pagasa’s advisory said conditions in the equatorial Pacific remain indicative of a weak-to-moderate El Niño. It said the latest global observation shows sea surface temperatures (SST’s) warmed slightly in recent weeks indicating a slight strengthening of the current event. “Majority of statistical and coupled model forecasts from international climate centers predict that El Niño condition will prevail and continue at least up to early 2010," it added. -GMANews.TV
