UNHCR offers Kris Aquino post of goodwill ambassador to Asia

In the tradition of filling its ranks with high-profile celebrities and personalities that deliver the goods, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has invited the President's sister, television host Kris Aquino, to be its ambassador of goodwill in Asia. Presidential political adviser Ronald Llamas on Monday said the UNHCR invited President Benigno Aquino III’s sister to be one of its ambassadors of goodwill. “Iniimbitahan nila si Kris Aquino na maging ambassadress of goodwill nila sa Asia in the tradition of Angelina Jolie and Princess Diana. Hindi ko alam kung tinanggap na ‘yung ganung klaseng offer ng UNHCR," he said at a press briefing in Malacañang. Llamas arrived early Monday from Geneva, Switzerland where he attended the UNHCR executive meeting. He said the UN body also invited President Aquino to keynote its 60th anniversary in December. “Me invitation sila sa ating Presidente na tayo ay magbigay ng keynote speech in front of more than 80 heads of state sa Disyembre sa anibersaryo ng UNHCR. Sa 80 heads of state tayo ang iniimbitahan nila para magbigay ng keynote speech," he said. He added thatUN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, former prime minister of Portugal, lauded the Philippines for its active role on the issue of refugees and displaced persons. The Philippines is the most active in Asia on the matter, Llamas noted. “Nagpapasalamat rin sila dahil meron tayong bill na nakasalang sa Congress para protektahan ang mga IDPs o ‘yung mga involuntary displaced persons," he said. — VS, GMA News
