Ex-Comelec chief Abalos spends first night in detention

Former Commission on Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos spent his first night in detention inside a small room at the Southern Police District in Taguig City.

Abalos was detained in a room inside the SPD's special task force office, with no television or phone, radio dzBB reported before dawn Wednesday.

But the report said Abalos expected to have breakfast with his family there in the morning.

The former Comelec chairman turned himself in to the Pasay City court after the court ordered his arrest for electoral sabotage.

He underwent standard procedures at the Pasay City police headquarters, including having his mug shots and fingerprints taken, before proceeding to the SPD.

Abalos' supporters gathered outside the Pasay City police headquarters to show their support for him.

Meanwhile, the Pasay City court is due to hear on Friday Abalos' motion to allow him house arrest.

Abalos earlier said he would not run away from the charges against him and that he would voluntarily show himself if the court ordered his arrest. — ELR, GMA News
