Corona says P80M in peso accounts constitute commingled funds

Chief Justice Renato Corona currently maintains three "commingled" peso accounts with P80.7 million that came from his personal savings, among other sources, the embattled chief justice told the Senate impeachment court Friday.

In his testimony, Corona said portions of the P80 million in those three accounts came from the Basa-Gudiote Enterprises Inc. (BGEI), a company owned by the family of his wife Cristina, as well as from their children Francis, Carla, and Charina, and from his mother.

Corona said he and his family intended to save their money in those three accounts, because "mas malaki po ang deposit, mas malaki po ang interes na nakukuha namin."

Of the P80 million, Corona said 15 million came from his US-based daughter Charina, P4 million from Carla–who used to be a physical therapist in the US–and P2 million from Francis.

He also said some P10 million in those three accounts came from BGEI, which accounted for the firm's profits for 11 years.

Corona said his mother also entrusted to him money that was allotted for medical expenses of the family.

"Kukunin mo na lang diyan ang lahat ng pagpapagamot sa akin at mga gamot ko at sa doktor at funeral," Corona recalled his mother telling him so. He said he used that money to pay for his mother's cancer treatment. —VS, GMA News
