UK tells nationals in PHL to follow authorities' advice on Mayon

Follow the advice of local authorities and do not venture inside the six-kilometer permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano.

This was the advice of the United Kingdom's Foreign and Commonwealth Office to its nationals in the Philippines, following a steam-driven eruption Tuesday morning at Mayon.

"You should follow the advice of the local authorities and respect the Mayon Volcano Permanent Danger Zone, which extends 6 km outward from the volcano’s crater," the FCO said in an update to its travel advice.

Earlier, Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Cedric Daep said they already discouraged tourists from climbing the volcano.

"May advisory (kami) kahapon (na) huwag umakyat (We already issued an advisory against going up the volcano)," Daep said in an interview on dzBB radio Wednesday.

As of Wednesday morning, Daep said the bodies of the five fatalities had been found, even as rescue operations for some of the injured were to resume. Four of the fatalities were German nationals.

The FCO, however, noted there are no reports of British nationals involved.

On the other hand, the updated Philippine map of the FCO did not indicate it was discouraging travel to any part of Bicol.

Earlier, the FCO had advised against all travel to Southwest Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago because of on-going terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups.

The FCO also advised against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao for the same reasons.

This means no magmatic eruption is imminent.

"However, small phreatic eruptions including small steam and ash explosions may occur suddenly with little or no warning. The public is strongly reminded of refraining from entry into the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the perennial threat of sudden steam-driven eruptions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano," Phivolcs said. — RSJ, GMA News
