PNoy hints of possible increase in MRT/LRT fare

President Benigno Aquino III on Monday hinted of a possible increase in the fare for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT).

During his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Aquino said the cost for each LRT ride is P40, only P15 of which is shouldered by the commuter and P25 by the government.

On the other hand, he said that the government shoulders P45 from each MRT ride which actually costs P60.

"Sa huli, bawat Pilipino abonado na ni minsan ay hindi nakatuntong sa LRT o MRT kasama ka sa pumapasan nito," he said.

Aquino likewise said that since the previous administration gave away the commercial rights to the MRT and LRT, any additional income goes to a private company instead of the government.

"Ang pwede sanang pagkunan ng pangtustos sa maintenance at operations nawala pa. Siguro naman po makatwirang ilapit man lang natin sa binabayad sa aircon bus ang pasahe ng LRT at MRT upang maituon ang subsidiya sa iba pang serbisyong panglipunan," he said. — RSJ, GMA News
