PNP: Violent incidents in 2013 barangay elections higher than in 2010 village polls

The number of election-related violence leading to Monday's barangay elections has climbed to 30, the Philippine National Police said Thursday.

The figure, recorded since the start of the election period on Sept. 28 until Oct. 24, is higher compared to the 25 incidents reported during the entire 45-day election period for the 2010 village polls.

"Medyo mataas ng konti sa 2013 compared to 2010," PNP spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor told reporters during a press briefing at Camp Crame.

In the 2007 village polls, police tallied 101 poll-related incidents, Mayor said.

As of Thursday, 22 individuals have been reported killed - eight barangay councilors, three barangay captains, three candidates, and eight civilians, the PNP said.

Meanwhile, among those wounded are four village councilors, four village chieftains, three municipal/city councilors, 12 civilians and a candidate, police said.

The Commission on Elections has deputized the police and military to ensure peaceful and orderly barangay elections on Monday.

Around 54 million voters are expected to vote in the October 28 barangay elections. The Comelec has set aside 170,603 clustered precincts spread throughout the country's 42,028 barangays in 80 provinces. — RSJ, GMA News
