NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll now at 5796; some 12M people affected


Nearly one month after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated parts of Visayas and Southern Luzon, the number of deaths it caused continued to rise, reaching 5,796 as of Saturday morning.

In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the number of injured also went up to 27,022, while 1,779 are still missing.

Yolanda battered Visayas and Southern Luzon last Nov. 8, making six landfalls and leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The NDRRMC also said that as of 6 a.m. Saturday, Yolanda had affected 2,592,257 families or 12,202,581 people in 12,120 villages in 44 provinces.

It displaced 846,003 families or 3,966,364 people. Of these, 21,356 families or 103,494 people are staying in 385 evacuation centers.

Also, the NDRRMC said Yolanda destroyed 599,121 houses and damaged 612,979 others.

Meanwhile, the damage caused by Yolanda remained at P35,239,886,330.67, including P18,206,735,334.29 in infrastructure and P17,033,150,996.38 in agriculture.

Power outages are still being experienced in Mimaropa, Bicol, and the entire Visayas.

The NDRRMC also said P988,282,264.39 in relief assistance has been extended to affected families. — LBG, GMA News
