NDRRMC: Yolanda damage estimate up to P35.5B


One month after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck Visayas and Southern Luzon, the extent of the damage it caused continued to go up, reaching P35.528 billion as of Sunday morning.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the estimated damage as of 6 a.m. Sunday stood at P35,527,886,330.67.

It said this included P18,206,735,334.29 in infrastructure and P17,321,150,996.38 in agriculture.

According to the NDRRMC, the additional damage included P7,277,150,764.29 in crops including rice and corn.

The death toll remained at 5,796, with 27,022 injured and 1,779 still missing.

Yolanda also affected 2,599,605 families or 12,265,259 people in 12,120 villages in 44 provinces. It displaced 853,634 families or 3,988,821 people.

Of those displaced, 21,356 families or 103,494 people are staying in 385 evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said Yolanda destroyed 551,991 houses and damaged 596,888 others.

The NDRRMC said Smart Communications' cellular services were restored in Southern Leyte as of Sunday morning.

Also, it said some P999,437,185.39 in relief assistance had been extended to the affected families so far. — LBG, GMA News
