DepEd: School year 2014-2015 to start June 2

Elementary and high school students now taking their vacation may want to mark June 2 on their calendars: that's when School Year 2014-2015 will start, the Department of Education said.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the coming school year, which will end on March 27 next year, will have 201 school days.

"Private schools may deviate from this School Calendar. However, they may not start classes earlier than the first Monday of June and not later than the last day of August ... They should also notify the appropriate DepEd officials in advance regarding any deviation," he said in DepEd Order No. 18 dated March 28, a copy of which was posted on the Philippine Information Agency's Facebook account Wednesday afternoon.

He also said schools may observe national and local celebrations and holidays, but make sure the total number of school days shall be maintained, and make-up classes held accordingly.

For this, he said the DepEd regional office may issue a regional school calendar to make sure "the total number of school days shall not be compromised." — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
