PNP Custodial Center could get too hot for Enrile

The PNP Custodial Center could get too hot for 90-year-old Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, some police officials familiar with the conditions at the detention center said on Monday.

The authorities, however, said it was up to the Sandiganbayan to decide on the matter of where to commit the accused in the pork barrel scam cases.

"Everything relating to them is for the Sandiganbayan to decide. Our role is to follow whatever the order given to us," PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada and Senator Ramon Revilla Jr., the two other senators accused of plunder in connection with the pork barrel scam, have already been detained at the facility.

Revilla on Friday complained of migraine due to the heat at his detention room.

"Senator Revilla and Senator Estrada are still young, I think it is not that much of a problem for them. But Senator Enrile? I don't think so," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

The source isn't authorized to speak on the matter.

"The description that it's like an oven is true. So I don't think that this is the right detention facility for him," said another official.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division has yet to issue a warrant for Enrile's arrest pending a motion to dismiss the case and another for the court to grant him bail.

In asking that he be granted bail, Enrile told the court that there was sheer insufficiency of evidence against him.  He also said that he was already 90 years old, of poor physical condition and required constant medical attention.

Enrile added that he had never violated the conditions of previous bails granted to him and he was not a flight risk, “and [would] surely appear before the  Sandiganbayan should the trial ensue.”

Enrile attached in the motion his medical certificates issued by his doctors.

A medical certificate issued by Dr. Claver Ramos of Makati Medical Center dated May 6, 2014 stated that Enrile has diabetes mellitus, dyslipiddemia, essential hypertension, extensive coronary artery calcification in the right coronary, left anterior descending and left circumflex, multifocal ventricular premature beats, episodes of bradycardia, colonic diverticulosis, thoracic and lumbar spondylosis L4-L5, alpha thalassemia and macular degeneration, chronic lacunar ischemic zones, scattered small luminal plaques of proximal middle segments of basilar artery, both horizontal and insular opercular branches of middle cerebral arteries.

Enrile is said to be taking 22 medications for his ailments. —NB, GMA News
