Priest's shaming of single mom at baby's baptism 'uncalled for,' says CBCP

A video of a priest delivering a sermon to shame a single mother during the baptism of her baby in Cebu last weekend is going viral online, and Catholic Church officials are not happy about it.

A report by Isay Reyes on GMA News TV's "News to Go" quoted CBCP Commission on Family and Life executive secretary Fr. Melvin Castro as saying that "if this really happened, it is uncalled for," adding that parents should have been catechized before the event.

The video, which had gone viral on social media, showed a priest telling a single mother that her baby was born out of sin.

GMA Cebu quoted the single mother, 17, as saying the sermon was an insult not only to her but also to her child and her family.

She said she was traumatized by the insults from the priest.

The GMA Cebu report said its news team went to the Sacred Heart Chaplaincy where the incident occurred Sunday, but it was closed.

It added the Redemptorist parish, which the priest belonged to has yet to issue a statement on the matter. - Joel Locsin, JST, GMA News
