Senate pays last respects to Flavier

The urn containing the ashes of the late Senator Juan Flavier was brought Monday morning at the Senate session hall to allow his former colleagues to pay their respects to him.

Among those present were former Senators Robert Jaworski, Nikki Coseteng, and Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel.

Also present were Senate President Franklin Drilon, acting Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III, Senators Miriam Defensor Santiago, Gregorio Honasan II, Sergio Osmena III, Loren Legarda, Bam Aquino and JV Ejercito.

Flavier, 79, served as senator from 1995 to 2007. He succumbed to multi-organ failure and sepsis on October 30, 2014 at the National Kidney Transplant Institute due to complications from pneumonia.

During the necrological service on Monday, senators will deliver eulogies.

A resolution expressing the Senate’s “profound sympathy and sincere condolence on the death of the former senator” will be presented to Flavier’s family.

“The hard working legislator registered a perfect attendance during the sessions and was instrumental in the enactment of landmark legislations promoting public health care and improving the quality of life of the people,” according to the resolution.

“The passing away of the illustrious senator is a great loss not only to his bereaved family but to the nation as well,” it added.

After the public viewing, the Senate will host a lunch for the family and relatives of Flavier, senators, and guests.

Senate Secretary Oscar Yabes said the pallbearers will carry the urn to the ground floor after lunch accompanied by senators and Senate officials.

“After the departure hymn, the designated pallbearers shall fold the national flag and hand it over to the Senate President who, in turn, will present the flag to the former senator’s family,” Yabes said.

Flavier served as DOH secretary from 1992 to 1995 before he was elected as senator under the administration of former President Fidel Ramos.

Flavier authored and sponsored several bills that became laws such as the following:
  • Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (Republic Act 8423);

  • Philippine Clean Air Act (R.A. 8749);
