No need for law protecting male domestic abuse victims –Pia Cayetano

There is no need for a law providing protection to male victims of domestic abuse, Senator Pia Cayetano said Tuesday.

In an interview, Cayetano said men, both in local and international fields, are not considered part of the vulnerable or marginalized sector like women, children, elderly and persons with disabilities.

“Hindi na [kailangan ng batas]. Maybe a hundred years from now, two hundred years from now pag-umiba [na ang panahon magagawa ito]. I’m not kidding,” she said.

Cayetano was reacting to the appeal of a men’s rights group Diego Silang that current laws were insufficient to protect males who were abused by their wives or partners.

Cayetano pointed out that it's the “women, children, elderly and those with disabilities are the ones who are defenseless.”

“Pag sinabi mo sa panahon sa giyera ang pinaka-vulnerable ay ang mga kababaihan dahil nagagahasa, ang mga bata dahil nawawalan ng magulang, ang matatanda who can’t defend themselves,” she said.

At present, the country has Republic Act (RA) 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 to protect the women and children.

Cayetano said this does not mean that men are never abused, just that the laws are made to protect those who are more prone to abuses.

“Hindi ibig sabihin na hindi namamatay ang isang makisig at isang malakas pa na kalalakihan. Wala namang nagsasabi na walang kalalakihan na namamatay, walang kalalakihan na nabubugbog, walang kalalakihan na naaapi. But the vast majority of domestic abuse incidents ay sa kababaihan,” Cayetano said.

She said the men can always seek assistance from authorities.

“Wala naman hong nagpipigil na humingi kayo ng assistance both sa barangay, sa PNP (Philippine National Police), sa pari, sa pastor, lahat naman ho ng avenue pwede pa din naman po. Ang ina-address lang po ay yong malalaking percentage na naapektuhan ng ganitong pangyayari,” she said. —KBK, GMA News
