Special services for PWDs and senior citizens readied for 2016 polls – Comelec

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens will again be given preferential services such as special voter registration and accessible polling places for the 2016 elections, the Commission on Elections said on Friday.

In a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali newscast, the Comelec said it has partnered with different organizations for the PWDs to ensure that they will be comfortable when they register and be able to cast in their votes in the 2016 elections.

There were 339,144 registered PWD voters in the October 28, 2013 barangay elections.

In the coming months, the Comelec will hold special voter registrations for PWDs and senior citizens in selected schools, malls, and other places they commonly visit.

The Comelec services are mandated by Republic Act No. 10366 or "An Act Authorizing the COMELEC to Establish Accessible Polling Places Exclusively for PWDs and Senior Citizens," enacted on July 23, 2012.

Registrants may download a copy of the registration form from the Comelec website, but the forms must be signed only in the presence of the Comelec during registration proper.  — Trisha Macas/ELR , GMA News
