MILF’s Iqbal attends Senate hearing on bloody Mamasapano clash

(Updated 10:03 a.m.) Moro Islamic Liberation Front peace panel chairman Mohagher Iqbal on Thursday appeared before the Senate hearing on the Mamasapano clash which left 44 PNP-Special Action Force commandos dead.

Iqbal previously requested that his appearance before the Senate be held in executive session. The MILF official had also made a similar request to the House of Representatives.

Iqbal was seated beside Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, who chairs the Philippine peace panel negotiating with the MILF.

Before the hearing started, security measures were extra strict compared to the previous hearings conducted on Monday and Tuesday.

The Senate security personnel checked all people who enter the building and asked them to sign their names on an attendance sheet.

Previously, only the resource persons and guests were asked to identify themselves before entering the session hall.

Among those who arrived early were Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, PNP Board of Inquiry and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Director Benjamin Magalong, Armed Forces chief General Gregorio Pio Catapang, and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin. — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
