Senator Pia Cayetano's mobile phone snatched in Madrid, Spain

Senator Pia Cayetano shouted for help moments after her mobile phone was snatched while she was walking along an alley in Madrid, Spain last Sunday.

The senator went to Spain to run in the Madrid Rock 'n' Roll half marathon. Her mobile phone was stolen in the afternoon after the run Sunday morning.

Cayetano was checking Google Maps on her mobile phone when it was snatched from her by a thief riding a bicycle.

"As I was walking along an alley, glued to the Google maps on my phone, a bike swept past me as I saw a hand reach out and grab my phone! I ran after him but as he picked up speed on the bike, I threw my charger at him, hoping it would knock him out. But of course it didn't, so I started shouting for help," the senator said in her post on Facebook Monday afternoon (PHL time).

Fortunately for her, some able-bodied bystanders nearby sprung to action to help her.

"That (shouting for help) proved to be more effective because these big guys across the street heard me and pulled him off his bike and pinned him to the ground. Police arrived in a few minutes and took me to the police station to file my report."

The visit to the Madrid police station was an opportunity for the senator to speak in Spanish.

"Not one to get an opportunity pass, I practiced my Spanish on the police and gave my testimony in Spanish," Cayetano said.

She posted a picture of the police station visit and of the incident report she filed there.

Cayetano said maybe she has had enough running in Madrid. She decided to rest her feet.

"I think I'll take a break from running tomorrow. Lesson learned: Always be on guard wherever you are." the senator said. — ELR/JDS, GMA News
